WHAT'S NEW
ISO 17025 Accreditation for Pipette Calibration
Canada, Ontario, Guelph, July 15th, 2010
Mandel Scientific Company Inc. is pleased to announce that its Pipette Calibration Laboratory is now CLAS/ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited for pipette volume (NRC Accreditation # CLAS 10-03; SCC Accredited Laboratory # 679).
ISO 17025 is a recognized international standard that specifies the requirements for laboratories to carry out calibrations to comply withinternational methods.
As specified by the National Research Council (NRC):
“To be eligible for a CLAS certificate, a calibration laboratory must demonstrate that it is capable of doing
specific calibrations and measurements with verified uncertainties and traceabilities to the SI. It must also
have in place the appropriate personnel, measurement standards and equipment, systems, procedures,
and environment necessary to achieve the measurement uncertainties that it is claiming. Finally, it must
successfully complete the CLAS assessment of compliance to the criteria and requirements of CAN-P-4E
(ISO/IEC 17025), General Requirements for the Accreditation of Calibration and Testing Laboratories.”
Customers can now have increased confidence with the results of their pipette calibration when they
choose Mandel. All pipette calibration needs can now be met because of this rigorous accreditation
process, including the need for customers to have their equipment calibrated to ISO 17025 to comply with
their own accreditation status. By choosing a company that is CLAS/ISO 17025 accredited you are
ensuring the calibration laboratory has written and follows procedures specifically to maintain a high
quality standard of measurements.
Mandel has been providing pipette calibration for over 35 years and have undergone this accreditation
process to ensure they are able to provide services for all of their customers’ needs, and to prove its
dedication to the highest quality of pipette calibrations. Mandel’s technicians are specifically trained and
specialized to handle pipettes, calibration equipment and strict pipette calibration methods.

ChemoMetec A/S and Mandel Scientific Company Inc. Announce Exclusive Distribution Agreement
Allerød, Denmark and Guelph, Ontario Canada, February 17, 2009.
ChemoMetec and Mandel Scientific Company Inc. are pleased to announce that Mandel Scientific has been appointed as the exclusive distributor in Canada for ChemoMetec. Mandel will begin distribution of the NucleoCounter® line of cell counters in Canada, effective February 17, 2009.
ChemoMetec A/S has developed and patented a new technology which addresses the problems of conventional cell counting. Compared to traditional cell counting methods, the operation of the NucleoCounter® is fast, efficient and reliable. The NucleoCounter® offers an analysis time of less than 30 seconds per sample, as well as high precision and reproducibility, by removing the opportunity for human error. The result is a fast and operator-independent cell count. The NucleoCounter® is portable and compact, requires no daily cleaning or calibration, and is maintenance-free. The compact instrument fits perfectly in any mammalian cell laboratory (e.g. research, quality control or monitoring of production).
”The NucleoCounter® is an integrated fluorescence microscope designed to detect signals from the fluorescent dye, propidium iodide (PI) bound to cell nuclei. It is fast and precise, with objective counting and viability determination of mammalian cells. The NucleoCounter® is an exciting addition to Mandel’s existing cell culture product lines.”
The principle of the technique is the well-known method of fluorescence microscopy, implemented in a small, highly advanced fluorescence microscope combined with a CCD camera and image analysis software. The fluorescence microscope is designed to detect signals from the fluorescence dye propidium iodide, which stains the DNA of cell nuclei. This result represents either a total or non-viable cell concentration, depending on the preparation of the cell sample. Detected signals are correlated to a cell count, which is presented to the user in the built in display. The image and results can also be transferred to a PC for viewing and documentation purposes using the NucleoView™ software application.
ChemoMetec A/S develops analytical instruments and techniques in the field of particle analysis. The ChemoMetec technique has been successfully applied in the analysis of biological samples such as mammalian and yeast cell cultures, blood, animal semen and milk. The company's expertise lies in the development of high-tech products based on low-cost solutions. The ChemoMetec Technology can be deployed in both stand-alone and on-line instruments.
Founded in 1997, ChemoMetec A/S has expanded rapidly and further growth is envisioned in the near future. Today, ChemoMetec works closely with hospitals, research institutes and universities in order to maintain focus on recent developments and customer needs. The goal is to establish a solid strategic foundation through extensive patenting of ChemoMetec's core technologies.

IBDL implements VACUSAFE comfort units throughout
their laboratories
The VACUSAFE comfort from INTEGRA Biosciences is a highly safe vacuum system that has been specifically developed for easy and rapid handling of hazardous liquids.
The Industrial BioDevelopment Laboratory (IBDL) (www.ibdl.ca) is a state of the art biologics teaching and research and development facility located within the University Health Network (UHN) (www.uhnresearch.ca) which is Canada's largest hospital network, comprising a network of three teaching and research hospitals. The UHN's recently completed new research complex occupies 9 floors of the MaRS centre in the Toronto Medical Discovery Tower. Employing around 500 researchers, UHN is home to many research programs and laboratories focusing on specific disciplines and diseases.
"It is one of the most practical products to come on the market in the last few years. We have purchased over a dozen units after initially evaluating the device against competitive technologies".
Faced with increasingly stringent safety guidelines in terms of handling contaminated solutions the IBDL elected to implement VACUSAFE comfort units throughout their laboratories as the system demonstrated its ability to ensure user safety and maximize productivity while minimizing noise and operational inconveniences.
Andre Siegel, Manager of the IBDL, said "VACUSAFE was our product of choice as it is quiet in operation and convenient in use, it does what it is supposed to do reliably day-in, day-out". He added "It is one of the most practical products to come on the market in the last few years. We have purchased over a dozen units after initially evaluating the device against competitive technologies".
The new generation VACUSAFE comfort is designed for aspiration, disposal or filtration of biological/chemical liquids in a clean and professional way. All required functionality is integrated in a compact design and ready to use at the push of one button only.
Until now, aspiration and disposal applications required noisy, complicated and incompatible 'home made' systems or were connected directly to the laboratory vacuum system, risking contaminating the entire vacuum system. The VACUSAFE comfort eliminates all these disadvantages and is an easy and convenient tool.
